Short answer, as of 2026: EV charging in Labuan Bajo is town-scale, not island-scale. You can comfortably run an electric car for airport pickups, in-town movement and short viewpoint or sunset runs, charging overnight at your accommodation or at a public charger in town. What you cannot yet do is drive an EV across Flores end to end on the Trans-Flores route without long waits, careful staging and real risk of being stranded. What does EV charging in Labuan Bajo look like as of 2026?
There are two layers to it, and only one of them is dependable.
The first layer is public charging. Indonesia’s public charging framework is built around PLN’s SPKLU network, and Labuan Bajo, as the gateway to Komodo National Park and a designated priority tourism destination, has been part of that rollout. Units get added, relocated and occasionally taken offline for maintenance, and the practical availability on any given afternoon is not something anyone can honestly promise in writing months ahead. We check live status before every electric-vehicle booking rather than quote a fixed list here.
The second layer, and the one that actually makes EV travel work here, is destination charging. A growing number of hotels, villas and operator bases in and around town have AC wall units or dedicated outlets. Overnight AC charging is slow but predictable, and predictability is worth more than speed in a town this size.
Our working rule: treat any public fast charger as a bonus, never as the plan. Build the itinerary around a guaranteed overnight charge, and anything else is upside.
Where do you actually plug in around town?
- Your hotel or villa. The most reliable option. A proper AC wallbox will take a typical compact EV from low to full overnight. Confirm before you book that the property has a working unit and that it is available to guests rather than reserved for staff vehicles.
- Public charging in the town area. Useful as a mid-day top-up if it is free and functioning. Expect to share it, and expect no queue system.
- Operator-side charging. Our electric vehicles charge at base between assignments, which is why an EV airport transfer or a short town job is straightforward to arrange even when public units are busy.
- A standard household socket. Possible, but slow. On a normal 220V domestic outlet you are adding only a modest amount of range per hour, so treat it as an emergency trickle, not a charging strategy.
Why the Trans-Flores overland route is not yet EV-viable end to end
This is the honest part, and it is the part most articles skip.
The classic overland run from Labuan Bajo east through Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende and Kelimutu to Maumere covers well over 600 km of mountain road, typically across three to five days. The driving hours are far longer than the distance suggests: switchbacks, ridge sections, market traffic in the towns, and stretches where recent weather dictates your speed.
The problem is not one long leg. It is that the corridor between towns has no dependable spacing of fast chargers as of 2026. An EV that arrives in a highland town at 15% with no working charger has no realistic recovery option. There is no dense recovery network, and a flatbed from the coast is a very long and expensive day.
So we keep overland on internal combustion. How much range do Flores hill roads really cost you?
Manufacturer range figures are measured on flat test cycles in mild conditions. Neither applies here. Realistically, plan for the following:
- Sustained climbing eats range fast. The pull inland from the coast toward Ruteng, which sits above 1,000 m, is a long net climb. Expect consumption well above the rated figure on that kind of leg.
- Regenerative braking gives some of it back on the descent, but never all of it, and long downhill sections in a tropical climate mean the air conditioning is running the entire time anyway.
- Heat and humidity are a permanent load. Climate control in 30°C-plus humidity is not optional for guests, and it runs continuously.
- Rough or unsealed detours after heavy rain add distance and reduce efficiency.
Our planning rule of thumb, not a guarantee: assume usable range of roughly two-thirds of the sticker figure on hill routes, and never let the itinerary depend on the last 20% of the battery.
Which trips actually make sense in an EV right now?
Plenty, as long as they start and end in town. Komodo Airport (LBJ) sits only a few minutes from the town centre and the harbour area, which makes short-radius electric work genuinely practical.
- Airport arrivals and departures. Short, quiet, air-conditioned, and easy to schedule around a charge. See Komodo Airport transport for meeting points and flight-delay handling.
- In-town movement. Hotel to restaurant to harbour, evening dinner runs, and shuttling between a villa and the pier before a liveaboard departure.
- Sunset and viewpoint runs. Short hill climbs to the ridgeline lookouts above town, plus Batu Cermin cave, all sit comfortably inside a single charge with margin.
- Half-day village and waterfall gateways. Doable in an EV with planning, provided the vehicle returns to a known charge point the same day rather than continuing east.

When we will tell you to take a combustion vehicle instead
We would rather lose the booking than strand a guest at 1,200 m at dusk. We recommend against an EV for: any multi-day Trans-Flores overland itinerary; Wae Rebo, where the final approach to the trailhead requires a 4×4 before you even start the hike; groups of six or more with dive gear or full luggage; back-to-back dawn-to-late-night days in peak season where no charging window exists; and heavy wet-season road conditions.

Practical planning notes
- With-driver is the norm here. Nearly all vehicle hire in Labuan Bajo comes with a driver. For an EV this is an advantage: the driver manages the charge level and the charging stop so you never have to think about it.
- Pre-book for June to September. The electric fleet is small and the peak season demand is real. Late requests in high season usually get a combustion vehicle instead, simply because that is what is left.
- Tell us your flight and boat times first. Charging windows are built around your schedule, not the other way round.
- Ask your hotel directly whether guest charging is available and working. Hotel websites are often out of date on this.
