Why does the Fortuner matter on Flores roads?
Most Labuan Bajo trips never leave asphalt, and for those a van or MPV is the smarter, cheaper choice. The Fortuner earns its price on a specific set of legs where clearance and chassis rigidity stop being a comfort feature and become a go/no-go issue.
- Wae Rebo access (Denge village): the final stretch from Dintor to Denge is a narrow, steep, partly unpaved climb with washed-out sections and exposed rock. Low-slung vehicles scrape their underbody and front lip here; drivers of small MPVs frequently stop short and leave passengers to walk or transfer. A Fortuner reaches the Denge trailhead directly.
- Sano Nggoang crater lake: the approach off the Trans-Flores road deteriorates quickly after rain, with deep ruts cut by drainage runoff. Ground clearance and a high air intake position matter more here than horsepower.
- Rainy-season overland (roughly November to March): the Trans-Flores highway itself is paved, but landslide detours, temporary gravel bypasses and standing water at village crossings are normal in these months. A ladder-frame SUV handles a diverted route without drama.
- Long inland days: on 6-10 hour driving legs toward Ruteng, Bajawa and Ende, the Fortuner’s suspension travel and torque delivery reduce fatigue for both passengers and driver compared with a loaded compact MPV.
What ground clearance actually buys you
Ground clearance is not about looking rugged. On unpaved access roads the failure modes are specific: the front bumper contacting a raised drainage lip, the underbody grounding on a rut crown between two wheel tracks, and the exhaust or fuel tank taking a hit from a loose rock. Each of these ends a trip. Roughly 200-220 mm of clearance, combined with a body-on-frame construction that tolerates chassis twist, is the practical threshold for the access roads described above — which is exactly why local drivers, not just tourists, choose this class of vehicle for inland work.
How many people fit in a Fortuner?
Be realistic about this, because it is the single most common booking mistake. The Fortuner is sold as a 7-seater with a third row, and the specification is honest — but the third row eats the luggage space. Our practical guidance:
- 4 adults with full luggage: comfortable. Third row folded, all bags inside, long-day capable.
- 5 adults with moderate luggage: workable. Third row folded, cabin bags plus 3-4 medium suitcases.
- 6-7 passengers: possible for short transfers only, with minimal luggage or a roof arrangement. Not recommended for a full overland day.
If you are 6 or more travellers with luggage on a multi-day route, the correct answer is usually two vehicles or a larger van — and if your route stays on asphalt, a van is both more comfortable and cheaper. We will tell you that on WhatsApp rather than sell you a Fortuner you do not need.
What is included with a Fortuner charter?
Standard Fortuner service from Komodo Transport includes the vehicle, an experienced local driver who knows the Flores road network, fuel for the agreed itinerary, parking and standard road tolls, and drinking water on board. Air conditioning is standard. For overland routes, driver meals and accommodation on multi-day trips are normally included in the quoted daily rate — we state this explicitly in the quote so there are no surprises at the end of the trip.
Not included: entrance tickets, national park fees, guide fees at specific sites, and your own accommodation. Self-drive is not offered on rough-road routes; a driver who knows where the road surface changes is a safety component, not an upsell.
How do you book a Fortuner in Labuan Bajo?
The process is deliberately short. Message our WhatsApp with four pieces of information: your dates, your route or destinations, the number of passengers and bags, and your pickup point (airport, hotel or harbour). We reply with a fixed quote in USD, the vehicle assignment and the driver’s name and contact once confirmed. There is no online checkout — pricing depends too much on route, season and duration for a fixed cart price to be honest.
For Wae Rebo and Sano Nggoang legs, book earlier than you think you need to. The number of vehicles in Labuan Bajo genuinely suited to those roads is limited, and in peak months (July-August, and the Christmas-New Year period) they are committed well in advance.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Fortuner necessary for Wae Rebo, or can a normal car do it?
Ordinary cars and small MPVs reach Dintor without difficulty. The problem is the final climb to Denge, where clearance and traction decide whether you arrive at the trailhead or stop short and walk an extra stretch. In dry season a determined driver in an MPV sometimes makes it; after rain, we do not recommend attempting it in anything without proper clearance.
Is the Fortuner 4×4 or 2WD?
Fortuner units in Indonesia come in both configurations, and the majority of rental fleet vehicles in this region are 2WD with high clearance. For the routes described here, clearance plus an experienced driver covers the vast majority of conditions. If your itinerary genuinely requires 4×4, tell us on WhatsApp and we will confirm availability rather than assume.
Can I take the Fortuner on a multi-day overland trip across Flores?

Then a different vehicle is the better answer.
