A Flores overland package by car is a multi-day private drive across the island of Flores — most commonly Labuan Bajo to Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende, Kelimutu and Maumere — using one vehicle and one driver for the whole journey. Komodo Transport arranges it as a quote-based private charter in an SUV or a Toyota HiAce, with fuel, driver and route planning handled for you, and you paying your own hotels along the way. As of 2026 the full west-to-east crossing runs roughly 650-700 km on the Trans-Flores road and is realistically comfortable in four to five days, or seven if you want to travel slowly.
What does the Flores overland route actually cover?
The classic crossing follows the Trans-Flores highway east from Labuan Bajo. It is paved almost the entire way but constantly winding through mountains, so average speed is low — plan by hours, not kilometres. These are the segments and honest driving times we work with, excluding stops:
| Segment | Approx. distance | Realistic drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Labuan Bajo → Ruteng (via Cancar) | ~135 km | 4-5 hours |
| Ruteng → Bajawa | ~130 km | 4-5 hours |
| Bajawa → Ende (via Blue Stone Beach) | ~125 km | 4-5 hours |
| Ende → Moni (via Wologai) | ~52 km | 1.5-2 hours |
| Moni → Kelimutu crater car park | ~13 km | 30-40 minutes |
| Moni → Maumere airport | ~96 km | 2.5-3 hours |
The named stops most guests ask for are the Cancar spiderweb rice fields outside Ruteng, the megalithic village of Bena below Mount Inerie near Bajawa, the highland village of Wologai between Ende and Moni, the three coloured crater lakes of Kelimutu at sunrise, and Blue Stone Beach at Penggajawa on the Nangapanda coast, where the beach is covered in polished blue-green stones.
Which day-split should you choose?
3 days — the fast crossing
Day 1 Labuan Bajo → Ruteng with a Cancar stop. Day 2 Ruteng → Bajawa → Ende, seeing Bena in the afternoon. Day 3 pre-dawn Kelimutu, then drive on to Maumere for an afternoon flight. This works, but it is three long driving days back to back and leaves almost no margin for rain or road repairs. We only recommend it if your flight dates are fixed.
4 days — the balanced version
Day 1 to Ruteng. Day 2 to Bajawa with Bena and the hot springs. Day 3 to Moni via Blue Stone Beach and Wologai. Day 4 Kelimutu sunrise, then Maumere. This is the split most guests are happiest with as of 2026: each drive stays under about five hours and every headline stop still fits.
5 days — with a coastal night
The four-day plan plus one extra night, usually in Ende or on the Riung side, so you have a genuine rest day and time for the Ngada villages or a swim before the Kelimutu morning.
7 days — the slow version
Two nights in the Bajawa area, a night around Riung, an extra night in Moni, and unhurried stops for weaving villages, markets and coffee gardens. Longest single drive stays around four hours. This is the version we suggest for photographers, families with children, and anyone who dislikes early starts.
SUV or HiAce — which vehicle fits your group?
For two to four people with normal luggage, an SUV is the better ride on Flores mountain roads. A Toyota Fortuner or similar handles the gradients and rough patches comfortably. From five people upward, or when everyone travels with a large case, a Toyota HiAce Premio gives far more legroom and luggage space and still copes with the route. All overland charters include an experienced Flores driver; on request we assign a driver who speaks conversational English, though this depends on availability and should be confirmed when you book.
What is included, and what is not?
Included: private vehicle for the whole itinerary, driver, fuel, standard parking and any road tolls, route planning and daily timing, and flexible pick-up in Labuan Bajo town, at the harbour or at Komodo Airport.
Not included, stated honestly: your accommodation, your meals, and entrance or conservation fees at Kelimutu, Bena, Wologai and similar sites. The driver’s meals and accommodation are also not included in the base vehicle rate — most guests either add a modest daily allowance to cover them or ask us to build it into the quote. Guide services, boat trips, and domestic flights are separate. We prefer to say this clearly up front rather than surprise you on day three.
How much does a Flores overland package cost?
Pricing is per vehicle, not per person, so the more of you there are the better it works out. These are indicative 2026 figures for planning only:
| Duration | SUV (up to 4 guests) | HiAce (up to 8-10 guests) |
|---|---|---|
| 3 days / 2 nights | from USD 480 | from USD 630 |
| 4 days / 3 nights | from USD 630 | from USD 820 |
| 5 days / 4 nights | from USD 780 | from USD 1,000 |
| 7 days / 6 nights (slow) | from USD 1,060 | from USD 1,380 |
Disclaimer: these amounts are indicative and not a confirmed quote. Final pricing depends on season, exact routing, vehicle model and availability, fuel cost at the time of travel, and whether you want the driver’s meals and lodging bundled in. A one-way drop in Maumere normally carries a repositioning surcharge of roughly USD 90-140, because the vehicle and driver must return west. Ask us for a written quote before you commit.
How do you book the overland drive?
Message us on WhatsApp with your arrival date, the number of passengers and cases, how many days you have, and your intended fly-out point — most guests end at Maumere, some at Ende. We reply with a day-by-day plan, the vehicle we propose, a firm USD figure, and honest notes on anything that will not fit in your timeframe. Booking is confirmed with a deposit; the balance is normally settled at the start of the trip. For a shorter taste of the route, we also run single legs such as Labuan Bajo to Bajawa and Labuan Bajo to Maumere as standalone one-way drives.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Trans-Flores road safe to drive?
It is a normal public highway, sealed for nearly the whole crossing, but narrow, steep and heavily curved, with occasional landslip repairs in the wet season. We plan daylight-only driving and build in buffer time. Guests prone to motion sickness should bring medication.
Can we do the route in reverse, from Maumere to Labuan Bajo?
Yes. Flying into Maumere and driving west is popular and works equally well, especially if you finish with boat days around Komodo. The same day-splits apply in reverse; only the Kelimutu morning shifts earlier in the trip.
When is the best time for a Flores overland trip?
April to October is the driest window and gives the clearest Kelimutu mornings. The green season from November to March is beautiful for rice terraces but brings a real chance of rain, cloud at the crater, and slower roads.
Can the same vehicle also handle Labuan Bajo day trips?
Yes — the overland vehicle can pick you up on arrival and cover town, harbour and Komodo Airport movements around your drive. If all you need is a short point-to-point ride rather than a multi-day journey, our sister brand Komodo Luxury covers those short bookings as well.
