Do Grab and Gojek work in Labuan Bajo?
Yes, both apps function in Labuan Bajo, and you can install and use them the same way you would in Bali or Jakarta. What differs is the supply side. Labuan Bajo is a small town, not a metro area, and the pool of registered app drivers here is thin compared with what visitors are used to. Motorbike options (GoRide, GrabBike) are the easiest to get because most local drivers ride a motorbike. Car options (GoCar, GrabCar) exist but are far fewer, and at busy moments there may be no car available at all within the app radius.
A few things follow from that thin pool:
- Wait times are unpredictable. A ride can arrive in four minutes or never get accepted. There is no useful average, because the number of drivers online at any hour swings widely.
- Peak season makes it worse. Roughly June through September, and again around the year-end holidays, demand for every vehicle in town rises while the driver pool stays about the same size.
- Luggage is a real constraint. A motorbike is not an option with two suitcases and a dive bag, which removes the most available vehicle type from the table exactly when you need transport most.
- There is no fallback taxi fleet. Labuan Bajo does not have the kind of large metered street-taxi operation you find in Bali or Jakarta. If the app fails, there is no queue of metered cabs to fall back on.
What ride-hailing is genuinely good for here
Use the apps without hesitation for these:
- Hotel to a restaurant or bar on Jalan Soekarno-Hatta or the waterfront strip, in daylight or early evening.
- A single-person hop with a daypack, no luggage.
- Short errands, minimarket, pharmacy, ATM, laundry.
- Food delivery, which is the strongest part of the ecosystem in town and often works when a ride does not.
For those trips, Grab and Gojek in Labuan Bajo are cheap, transparent and faster to arrange than anything else. Nobody needs a private car to go 1.5 km for dinner.

Komodo Airport (LBJ) arrivals
This is the most common failure point. Komodo Airport sits close to town, only a few minutes’ drive, so the fare is small and there is little incentive for a driver to wait around for it. On top of that, app pickups directly at Indonesian airport terminals are frequently discouraged, and you may be asked to walk out of the terminal area to meet the driver. Combine a small fare, a thin driver pool and several flights landing in the same window, and standing outside arrivals with your bags while requests time out is a normal outcome. If your itinerary starts with a boat or a same-day drive, that is the wrong place to gamble. A named-sign meet at arrivals removes the variable entirely.
Before dawn and after dark
Komodo National Park day trips and liveaboard boardings typically leave the harbour early, often between roughly 05:30 and 07:00. Very few app drivers are online at that hour. Late at night the same problem appears in reverse. If your transport has to happen at a fixed time outside normal daylight hours, treat the apps as unavailable and arrange the vehicle the day before.
Anything outside the town grid
App coverage effectively ends at the edge of Labuan Bajo. Places visitors actually want, Cunca Wulang waterfall, Rangko Cave, Melo Village, the Golo Mori area, viewpoint hills on the road out of town, sit beyond practical app range. Even when a driver accepts an outbound trip, there is often nobody to accept the return, and you are stranded somewhere with no phone signal and no vehicle. For those trips a half-day or full-day car with a waiting driver is the only sensible structure. The Trans-Flores road
There is no ride-hailing on the Trans-Flores highway. Ruteng, Wae Rebo, Bajawa, Riung, Ende and Kelimutu are multi-hour drives on winding mountain roads, and no app serves them. Overland Flores runs on pre-booked vehicles with experienced drivers, usually a Fortuner or similar SUV for the mountain sections, or a HiAce for larger groups. The last stretch toward Wae Rebo needs a high-clearance 4×4, not a small MPV. Improvising this with apps is not a cost saving, it is a lost day.

Practical tips for using Grab and Gojek in Labuan Bajo
- Get a local SIM or eSIM before you rely on the apps. No data, no ride, and airport wifi is not something to plan around.
- Check the app the moment you land to see live availability. If nothing is moving, do not spend 30 minutes hoping.
- Carry small cash. Not every driver handles in-app payment smoothly, and small notes prevent change disputes.
- Pin your destination carefully. Map data in Labuan Bajo is imperfect, and hotel pins are sometimes hundreds of metres off.
- Never plan a one-way app trip out of town. The return is the leg that fails.
