The road leaves Labuan Bajo heading east, passes the wide Lembor rice plain, then begins a long, steady climb into the Manggarai highlands. It is asphalt for the entire distance, but almost none of it is straight: expect several hundred bends, narrow sections where trucks meet buses, and occasional roadworks after heavy rain. Four hours is the realistic driving time without stops. With photo stops, lunch and a proper look at the rice fields, plan six to seven hours door to door.
Passengers sensitive to motion sickness should sit in the front row and take medication before departure rather than halfway up the mountain; our drivers pace the climb deliberately for this reason. Mobile signal is good in the towns and patchy on the ridges.
What can you stop for between Labuan Bajo and Ruteng?
- Cancar spiderweb rice fields (lingko lodok) — about 17 km west of Ruteng, roughly 15 minutes before town. Communal farmland divided in a radial web pattern from a central point. Viewing means a short uphill walk to a hill platform; a small community contribution is collected on site and is not included in the vehicle quote.
- Lembor rice plain — the widest agricultural flat in the region, good for a quick roadside stop before the climb begins.
- Liang Bua cave — about 14 km north of Ruteng, the excavation site where the Homo floresiensis remains were found. It sits off the main road, so tell us in advance if you want it added.

One-way drop. We drive you to Ruteng, drop at your hotel, and the vehicle returns. Because the car still has to come back empty, a one-way drop is priced closer to a full-day charter than to half of a return.
Day one of the traverse. Ruteng is the natural first overnight on the road east toward Bajawa, Riung, Ende and Maumere, and its cool highland climate makes it a comfortable place to break the journey. Is the road to Ruteng safe and fully paved?
It is paved for the whole distance and used daily by public buses and freight trucks. The real hazards are the curves, landslip repairs in the wet season, and driving after dark. We recommend a morning departure so the leg is completed in daylight.
Can we stop at the Cancar spiderweb rice fields on the way?
Yes — it is only a short detour before Ruteng and the most common addition to this leg. Allow 45 to 60 minutes including the walk up to the viewpoint. Mention it when you book so the driver plans the timing rather than rushing it.
Do I need to book a return, or can I continue east?
Either. Many travellers continue toward Bajawa the next morning with the same vehicle and driver, which avoids re-negotiating transport in a smaller town where options are thinner. If you only need the outbound leg, that is equally fine.
What is the weather like in Ruteng?
Noticeably cooler than the coast because of the altitude, often misty in the early morning and evening, and wetter than Labuan Bajo through the rainy months. Bring a light jacket even in the dry season.
